Elijah Lovejoy and the Abolitionist Movement Sept. 8

JohnDunphybookAuthor John Dunphy will present a program about Elijah Lovejoy and the Abolitionist Movement in Southwestern Illinois on Thursday, Sept. 8 at 6:30 at the Princeton Public Library.  In addition to talking about Lovejoy and his brother Owen, he will discuss Edward Coles, the second Governor of Illinois who kept the state slavery-free, and Senator Lyman Trumbull from Alton, Illinois who was the author of the Thirteenth Amendment that forever abolished slavery in the United States.

Dunphy’s book, “Abolitionism and the Civil War in Southwestern Illinois” tells the story of the Civil War and abolitionism beyond the Emancipation Proclamation and Appomattox. His knowledge was obtained by researching the enduring legacy those struggles left in our corner of Illinois.
